Persian
...Cat Breed
- History
- Cats with long coats were initially imported into Europe during the late 1500s. The story is that the Italian traveler Pietro della Valle, brought these cats back from Asia Minor.
More than likely, modern Persian cats are probably descendents from the Angora cats of Turkey that sailors and merchants brought back with them to Britain from their trip to Turkey and Persia (Now known as Iran) during the late 1800s.
- Description
- Persian Cats are longhaired cats with luxurious full, soft wooly undercoat hairs with longer coarser guard hairs. Persian cats have sturdy and rounded body with a round head and face, thick short legs, a short flat peke nose with large round eyes.
Their flat face which makes them so popular can also lead to health problems such as respiratory problem.
Persians come in wide range of colors and coat patterns.
- Temperament
- Persian cats are generally gentle, friendly, undemanding, calm and affectionate cats.
Persian Longhairs are among the most placid of cat breeds and will very seldom show their claws. It's not in their nature to be combative. This is why these serene cats usually get along so well with other cats as well as dogs.
This cat breed can spend hours lounging around in their favorite spot in the house without a care in the world. Being natural posers, they are also conscious of their attractive look and appeal. Persian will take any amount of spoiling and enjoy being petted and stroked.
- Care
- Persian Cats don't require special handling just daily grooming to prevent matting. If their coat gets densely matted it should be clipped.
Their eyes also need attention. These
cats have considerable problems with watering eyes which
overtime can cause dark discoloration caused by tear marks.
To prevent this, clean the folds of the face and around
the eyes every day using soft facial tissue. A special eye
lotion for cats can also be applied.
Most Persian cats enjoy their daily grooming sessions, but there are some who also dislike it as well. To prevent this problem it is best to train them at an early age so that they enjoy the grooming process.
