British Shorthair
...Cat Breed
- History
- The oldest English cat breed, British Shorthair cats can trace its ancestry back to the domestic cat of Rome. This breed was first prized for its physical strength and hunting ability, but soon became equally popular and valued for its docile and affectionate nature along with their loyalty to people.
Domestic cats have been around for thousands of years, but pedigree breeds are somewhat a new concept. During the turn of the century, the British Shorthair cat breed emerged with the first cat shows, which were held in Great Britain. At the time affluent British people started showing "exotic" pedigree cats from the Orient and other exotic countries.
- Description
- British
Shorthairs cats are medium-sized to large cats with males
being larger than females. This cat breed is heavier and
stockier than most domestic cats. The overall appearance
is round and massive like a "teddy bear".
They look adorable with their round heads
and large expressive eyes. Their ears are round and well
set apart. British Shorthair cats are stocky in build, have
deep chest, broad shoulders and a short muscular back. Their
legs are short with strong rounded paws. Medium in length,
the tail is thick and short with a rounded tip.
Their thick resilient coat is short but very dense. British Shorthair's coat is more smooth and carpet-like instead of being soft.
- Temperament
- This large docile cat is loving and affectionate with a quiet voice and does not constantly demand your attention. British Shorthairs are extremely tolerant and very adaptable cats. As a kitten they are as playful as any other cat, but as an adult cat they usually become less demanding and active. They enjoy napping for hours, but also enjoy being cuddled and touched.
Although their docile, British Shorthair cats will not always put up with everything, they will make it very clear if they are displeased. They usually get along with other cats and dogs. Most of these cats are great with children because of their gently and good nature.
British Shorthair cats adjust happily
in either an apartment or out on a farm. Due to their easy-going
nature and intelligence, this cat breed has become a favorite
of animal trainers. British Shorthairs have appeared in
numerous Hollywood movies and TV commercials.
- Care
- With their dense short coat, British Shorthair cats do not require excessive grooming. Gently brushing or combing once a week is all that's required.
If needed, clean their ears with a special cat cleaner and clip the tips off the cat's claw.
